The companies that have been "forced" to rehire for roles they cut in the name of "ai" knew that "ai" couldn't replace workers, and expected to rehire for those roles. Much like many, if not all RTO mandates, this was about having an excuse to erode worker power, a short term boost to their share price, and an easy way to do layoffs without looking weak. They never believed the things they said about AI anymore than they believe an open floorplan office is good for productivity! They, in fact, Usually believe the same thing about both: great for surveillance.
