The Dutch word ‘straat’ in the meaning of narrow waterway also comes from ‘via strata’ whilst the English word ‘strait’ with the same meaning and almost the same sound has a different ancestor: strictus…

@sjaakkeuvelaar@mastodon.nl Exactly. However, it turns out that the fact that Dutch calls it 'straat' is due to confusion with the original word 'straat'. Originally, Dutch used the French word that English borrowed as 'strait'.
