Well, you nailed the distinction. Powell is a "classical liberal" in the lines of Koch and their Cato Institute. They profess to be socially liberal & financially conservative.
However, in my experience (which is as real as it is regrettable), they are also egotists who use Randian philosophy to attempt to justify their "morals". And, yes, many of them voted for Trump because they (strongly) value conservative economics over social liberalism ... and justice ... and decency.

@VirginiaMurr@mastodon.social @Popehat@mastodon.social I am not a Randian (I find her philosophy wrong, and where she's not outright entirely wrong, her arguments are generally bad cases for her conclusions), my moral view is (largely) grounded in my Buddhism (so I am by definition not an egoist), I am on record, for years, arguing that Trump represents a fascist turn, and basically all of my writing over the last few years at least has been about how important it is to center social liberalism in the libertarian project.
