@arossp@mastodon.social @Popehat@mastodon.social Perhaps I'm not looking very hard. Perhaps there's a reason that the pro-choice majority of libertarians you describe aren't outspoken enough about it to even get their message out, choosing instead of focus on policy positions that benefit mostly rich white men.

@arossp@mastodon.social @junecasagrande@mastodon.social @Popehat@mastodon.social my best guess is that you’re in an echo chamber and only see “libertarian” content when one of the paleos tweets something so horrifyingly bad that it gets noticed and dragged by “Occupy Democrats” or whatever vanilla progressive meme pages you follow. Do you know anything about Cato Institute or Institute for Justice?

From what I've seen, when people describe themselves as "conservative on economic issues, liberal on social issues" they figure treating social issues as non-political issues counts as that. Non-persecution equals allyship is one example. Another is being against government prohibition of transition (or abortion or some other crime against teh buybull), but against government funding of transition with noticeably higher priority. Or the erroneous (IMHO) belief that economic freedom is a necessary and sufficient condition for all personal freedoms. Also, self promotion is one of my weakest suits, so the "conservative on economic issues" part is also hostile to my interests. The private sector is a meritocracy of sociopathy. The best of both worlds would be the labor market conditions of the postwar era (including the post office jobs for us introverts) combined with the social freedoms that peaked during the Obama era.

  • @junecasagrande@mastodon.social @arossp@mastodon.social @Popehat@mastodon.social I think this is spot-on. One of the more respected classical libertarian intellects was my mentor in college (yes, many regrets). He's inordinately pro-choice. However, he has kept almost completely silent on the topic over the last, horrific year regarding abortion rights. I was pissed enough to jump on him publicly for it because he was ignoring it--though he had plenty of time & energy to rail against student-loan forgiveness.
