@junecasagrande@mastodon.social @Popehat@mastodon.social No, it's not. That's a comfortable caricature that makes it easy to dismiss arguments against one's policy preferences without having to critically engage them, but we should always strive to resist such traps and instead cultivate an informed and robust understanding of the range of political thought.

  • @arossp@mastodon.social @Popehat@mastodon.social Hard not to caricature when I've never seen a self-described libertarian stand up for women's reproductive freedom yet I've seen many oppose it.

  • @arossp@mastodon.social @junecasagrande@mastodon.social @Popehat@mastodon.social the problem is that libertarianism says we should generally leave things alone. Which ignores the centuries of systemic damage done. You didn't do the damage but most white people have benefited from it, and damn near all POC/minorities have been punished by it. And the systemic racism in the system now. I don't see libertarian plans to address that. And *that* is directly in favor of the white male. To not pay for the damage his group has caused.

@arossp@mastodon.social it may be a caricature of classic libertarianism, but in my (granted quite limited) experience, it's a reasonably accurate representation of recent Libertarian Party candidates for office, as @Popehat@mastodon.social alludes to.

@arossp@mastodon.social @junecasagrande@mastodon.social @Popehat@mastodon.social a libertarian position in a world full of inequality and oppression is like a pacifist position during a war of aggression: callously blind to reality
