Imagine if in 1980 IBM had partnered with Digital Research instead of Microsoft. Gary Kildall might become the era’s Bill Gates, CP/M could emerge as the PC standard with “CP/M Compatible” badges replacing “Windows Compatible.” GEM might be the default GUI, Gates is a typical software vendor and Microsoft Office never rules business.
