Here is a question that came up today while discussing Stanley's 'Context and logical form' with my students: https://doi.org/10.1023/A:1005599312747
Suppose someone says 'a world famous topologist'. Let's agree that it is clear in the context that they have asserted that Jane is a world famous topologist.
Can we distinguish between the following views?
1. The utterance contains an unpronounced 'she'.
2. The utterance is not a complete sentence, but can be used to make an assertion.
