When Delorean Motor Company went out of business, they took a few smaller automotive suppliers down with them.
Läpple, the company in Carlow that pressed the DMC12 panels, sold off the tooling for scrap, at a small fraction of their true value.

"As part of the deal, we ended up owning them, and could dispose of them. We sold them to a scrap steel dealer, who sold them on to the fish farms off the west coast where they were used as anchors to hold down lobster cages."

There was a rumour of someone who wanted to buy up these rusty lumps of scrap iron from the fish farm, and somehow do the work required to make them good enough to press replacement DMC-12 door and body panels out of brushed steel stock. But they were unusable before they had even left the Läpple factory: "We would have had problems with them just keeping them in storage without constantly oiling them. If dies aren’t oiled they rust away to bits. You get pitmarks in the surface very quickly."
