@proactivebusybody@triangletoot.party I haven't actually done it myself yet, but the idea is explained in various guides I've seen, e.g. https://blog.djnavarro.net/posts/2022-11-03_what-i-know-about-mastodon/#how-can-i-make-threads - it avoids having your thread tweets take up space in feeds, while still having the existence of the thread signalled by the first tweet (which should be descriptive, I guess). Some people are setting their default permission to unlocked, and only setting it to public on posts that need it
