Someone was talking about making an app for a local tool share, making it purely as a public good, not a business.
In the past this would be a Good Idea That Won't Happen (because despite good intentions it was too big a job for a hobby). Now it feels much more feasible.
But _running_ the software is still much harder. Obviously people do cooperative hosting operations (hachyderm.io providing this for me as I write this!) but I'm not aware of clear processes and patterns for doing so.
Feels a bit cliche, but like the equivalent of GitHub for ops: well understood patterns, a locus for activity, and a set of tools for collaborating on hosted services.
One can imagine a future with an internet that was filled with Craiglist-like sites, humbly providing collective tools that prioritize being of service over any commercial goal or need for expansion.
