Fines for distracted driving — a petty misdemeanor — start at $100 for the first offense and can rise to more than $125 with court fees tacked on. Subsequent violations start at $300, according to DPS.
“If you injure or kill someone while violating the hand-free law, it is considered reckless and careless driving,” the DPS website says. It can also carry a felony charge of criminal vehicular operation or homicide.
