The "surface trap"
There's a human tendency to fixate on the significance of the framing of details within our special-interest domains; as if they (details) belong absolutely to the domain, and are therefore absolutely distinct from the same details within other domains. I think deep down, we known this isn't true, yet we can't help ourselves from latching-on to the deceit...
We see examples all over society: from the heady heights of the special-domain details of isolated scientific disciplines; to basic human coexistence — tribalism, racism, sexism, genderism, etc
All cases result from a failure to:-
- realise, that in a coherent relative universe, all detail is relative, and all unique detail is necessarily relative to what is common
- reconcile, apparently distinct/unique/absolute surface detail, as relative (and secondary) to all that is common between
> all unique special-domains are better thought of as a unique collection of general-domains, plus respective delta: which happens to be exactly what we do when we refactor software projects around standardised libraries and design patterns, etc
I think "surface trap" captures the disconnect of a fixation on "surfaces, as if absolute", as opposed to "leaf level arrangements of common essences", from which all stable form & complexity is composed
> In the context of software, "surface trap" covers everything from language fan-bois; to resistance to refactor a project due to sentimental attachment to present iteration/implementation/etc
they're fucking everywhere!
