@UnholyOrdnance@mastodonapp.uk alttext is a description of an image, linked to the image. You normally see it by hovering over an image with a mouse based system, or tapping with a touch screen system. This does depend on the instance and client though. My system will often put an "alt" spot on an image which has alttext, for example, so you have a set spot to tap. The use of it is to help people, those who can't see the image, and to help the poster of the image to clearly explain what the image conveys.
