@CommonMugwort@social.coop Well, this all relies on evolving in a long-gone salty sea, swimming in Na & K ions, and the co-evolving cell wall structure and ion channel control.
Folks with a stunning amount of patience have looked at the super-fine structure of old microfossils to try and tie some of these things down.
