One Nation's resounding win in Farrer is a clear marker of the accelerating collapse of civilisation and the planet. It's a victory for racism, xenophobia, climate denial, gun culture and outright delusion. Its people are proud enough of these primitive vices to gleefully vote against their own interests. They tout the win as a victory for democracy, yet their polity is one of exclusion and oppression. They apparently adore Trump even as his narcissistic ideology destroys global harmony and their living standards along the way. They say they will bring down the costs of living and of housing without any policies to effect this except hatred and exclusion of migrants, ironic in a rural electorate that depends on migrant labour to work its farms. They want to reverse the growth of renewable energy in favour of fossil and nuclear generation, which would increase energy costs, greenhouse pollution and risk of toxic radiation. The televised celebration of One Nation and the laments of the defeated Liberals last night were painted pure white, not surprising given their white supremacist cultures. No-one remarked on that. Their rise echoes that of populists Nigel Farrage in UK, whose supporters vote for him even though he caused many of their grievances by promoting Brexit. The grievances of the populists are genuine enough but their diagnoses and cures are laughable nonsense. Their supporters don't care. They have been whipped into anger against all the wrong targets, ultimately by right-wing billionaires and their greedy corporations, whose neoliberal dogmas are the very cause of the problems. Their evolving propaganda campaigns have constructed a delusional reality, a complete world that has an answer for every argument which is based on facts, logic and even emotional intelligence, but which appeals to the uneducated, largely male bogan elements and a faux flag-draped 'patriotism'. A perfect example is the smug, hubristic senator Malcolm Roberts who was gleefully hugging Pauline last night (after Barnaby had a go). I'm no climate scientist but I know enough to rebut every one of the false beliefs he can spout continuously in a stream of 'consciousness'. Anyway enough of the epistle.
