In Florence in 1492-94, “Florentine day laborers earned enough to live on working three days in a week, so usually took off the other four to look at art or listen to people recite Dante (really!),” (Ada Palmer). This in a city controlled by Medici oligarchs. This might have been a time when oligarchs were still afraid of the people. Perhaps we can make them afraid again.
