My contribution to the @atpfm convo on bifurcated Messages threads: I have a friend who's in Argentina, and her phone number in Contacts is e.g. +545555555555. She used to have Android so the thread started as SMS. When she switched to iPhone, her "canonical" iMessage number was auto-registered as +5495555555555 with a trunk prefix of 9. It automatically converted the Messages thread and usually works but if I ever make ANY update to her contact, it splits the thread in two until I reboot!
