@gregandcin@mindly.social if you want a backup, self-hosting something like GitLab is a waste of time and resources. `git clone --mirror` exists, and is enough to ensure you have the code somewhere.

@denschub@mastodon.schub.social I would say my advice is more for projects where they would want to be able to be up and running in case something happens to the GitHub repo and they want to instantly be able to get contributors/packagers on a new forge ASAP

Sure, that's usually the most important part, but it can be quite the significant drawback if issue tracking, wiki and maybe even discussion forums are just gone (or can't be used going forward). Don't underestimate how much there is to FOSS that isn't just code.
