My initial idea was to just send high resolution bitmaps to the printer. It works, but so far with my testing, vector data just produces much crisper results, which matters a lot for the readability of body text. For certain zine purposes where the quality is expected to be a bit rougher and type size can be a bit larger, bitmaps should be just fine. But for me, producing PDFs is good enough because I know I can potentially send that to a professional printing house and face no issues, while the idea of trying to tap straight into the printer drivers / rasterizers sounds like a a lot of work for little reward. On the other hand, that's also exactly why I'm experimenting with the single stroke fonts, so that I could use plotters instead.
