@ve7fim@mastodon.social That particular standard comes from DEC, but it’s a continuation of a *long* paper tape tradition. ASCII was formulated in the context of 8-hole paper tapes in the 1960s, and 5-hole tape goes way back to player pianos in the 1840s.
The most beautiful ones were punched in Mylar for durability, like this.
