@freedomtux@linuxrocks.online @phoronix@masto.ai i'd have to actually investigate, but i imagine bus mouse kernel drivers aren't very big. Are you talking about the kernel or the OS image? i ask because i haven't heard someone call vmlinuz an "image" in nearly a couple of dozen years. Stuff that's "set in stone" can generally be picked over for a decade, shrinking it, removing bad loops, quadratic algorithms, and still function correctly. Now if subsystems change and the driver can no longer make assumptions...

  • well, that's why windows sucks for old hardware on newer versions. sound cards and firewire will cause a reboot using windows 10 or other "generic" drivers, for example. I have to go look at the list to see if i need to buy a machine to handle any hardware...

  • @picofarad@noauthority.social @phoronix@masto.ai every package manager I've ever used calls a build of a linux kernel an image. Not sure what other concrete noun to use; image seems more accurate than binary
