@ColinTheMathmo@mathstodon.xyz Oh, sure, of course they choose to believe in the Van Allen Belt. Cherry picking to support paranoid fantasies. Back then, when it was thought to be impenetrably deadly, it was the inspiration for a novel I rather liked, "The Werewolf Principle" by Clifford Simak (the title concerns body transformation, not fantasy werewolves). The prelude says something like "The Van Allen radiation forever barred mankind from rocketing to the stars -- but that was ok. There was a better way."
