On the DOS platform it limits output to characters in the ASCII range 32..255 and assumes a system codepage set to Latin I.” It seems DOS version does assume Latin 1 encoding actually. But of course it doesn’t mean anything on DOS older than 5.0 which simply didn’t have support for any local codepages. I have distant memories of settting up country.sys for DOS..
