I don't know: Leaded fuel increased vehicle performance & fuel economy. Or CFCs as refrigerants were extremely common - but it became clear that the costs weren't worth the benefits

@gedankenstuecke@scholar.social @Gusted@social.linux.pizza which (unfortunately) didn't lead to remove cars, and (fortunately) didn't make fridges illegal. However, unleaded fuel became the norm, and most cooling systems now use non CFCs in their pipes.
