The big downside of gasoline is that it has to be drilled out of the earth and produced in a refinery.
Electricity can be produced almost everywhere with very little effort.
Sure, the technological development ran differently (it was easier to transport fuel somewhere than to use electricity - many alpine huts had/have gas lighting for that reason), but today it is entirely possible to have off-grid electricity - not in a city and not for industrial purposes.

Electricity requires digging in the earth too though, so I'm not following your logic here.
