@2003MugishaPhocit@mastodon.social (53 years ago) The voting age was lowered from 21 to 18 in Australia in 1973. The post-war arguments for lowering the voting age from 21 to 18 centred on the equity of 18 year olds being old enough to fight and die but not vote. This argument gained traction internationally in the 1960s with the rise of civil rights and the mass youth casualties of the War on Vietnam by USA and allies ie Australia. https://www.aph.gov.au/Parliamentary_Business/Committees/Joint/Electoral_Matters/VotingAge/Advisory_report/section?

  • @peterjriley2024@mastodon.social It is the same way in Uganda that the 18 years youths are counted old and the government says that they are able to use their brains to decide what is wrong and right! But the issue of unequal payments for the same job is not real and this is not equality to humans. Were the youths in Australia fighting in the war at 18 years?
