Omer Aziz, author of Shadows of the Republic: The Rebirth of Fascism in America and How to Defeat It for Good Opinion, don’t waste your time. “Reclaiming the flag”, “reclaiming patriotism”, “reclaiming what it means to be an American”, optics-obsessed protest that doesn’t allow the opposition to paint you in a negative light, rocking the vote —it’s all bullshit. Not because I don’t like it. Because it’s a failing strategy. Do I have to explain how USA was founded as a racist settler-colonial slaveocracy? Do I have to explain how the slave master’s constitution is structurally the problem even today? Do I have to explain that to be effective against mainlined fascism there is no behavior fascists will consider acceptable in the fight against them? Do I have to explain that the United States as such cannot be anything but its origin and to pretend otherwise is to be delusional and an enormous hypocrite that play directly into why Americanism plays directly into the messaging that works for fascism?
