Ever since I got this new modem from my ISP, I wanted to set it up to use my own DNS server instead of whatever it gets from the ISP. The poor device resisted all my attempts, up until now. The fields for configuring it were there in its management interface, but all the fields I wanted to change were disabled. Today I thought "what the heck, it's worth a try". I fiddled with the DOM of the config form for a while, made those input elements enabled, removed `display: none` from some other elements, typed in the address to the newly appeared input and submitted that. Lo and behold, the management interface now looks somewhat broken, but it now seems to work the way I want.
