I didn’t know anybody in the area could make glass that clear at that time. I guess folks would figure out the local chemistry and closely guard it until it was forgotten over and over.

Looking at this and the other beakers on that page, it almost seems like they were designed to be as challenging as humanly possible to use, and avoid accidentally shattering. I wonder if the broom and pan industry was thriving at the same time.
