The sentiment that critical thinking does not require training or discipline seems to be, sadly, inspired by envy. When people tell you they've done there own research on a topic that requires expertise, ask them where they earned their advanced degree. If they can't say, chances are they are relying on unverified and motivated slop in their research because they don't have the skills or grit to do research properly and they just want to malign those who do.
