@WideEyedCurious@mstdn.social @Hex@kolektiva.social I think the push for AI has a lot to do with COVID. We had a brief moment when a lot of people went "wow, OK, so things _could_ be very different. Also, look what happens if I stop going to work." Instead of the wealthiest folks saying "yeah, you know, we *could* make things better" they went "holy shit, we have to clamp down on this shit NOW or people won't grind their lives away for me and I can't (for some reason) have that. What if I become (gasp!) slightly less wealthy?!" I watched how some execs were all about their teams and telling people "hey, take care of yourself and family, they're more important" and others were "holy shit, I have to find ways to monitor all my team NOW." They were the ones, for example, demanding people turn on their webcams during meetings because they just had to feel they were in control. It's also what all the layoffs were really about -- billionaires getting huffy because developers were getting uppity: job-hopping, thinking they could have opinions about ethics, and "quiet quitting" for goodness sake!!
