@ArneBab@rollenspiel.social @maniajack@mastodon.world @Mer__edith@mastodon.world exactly. The problem with our insecure world, where most devices have security vulnerabilities and poor to nonexistent encryption is so that mass surveillance of people, even by private individuals (think controlling spouse and their family), is easy and possible. Having to enter a place surreptitiously and physically placing a hidden device should be the only way to surveil a person under the law.

@ArneBab@rollenspiel.social @maniajack@mastodon.world @Mer__edith@mastodon.world and of course if you are not a designated law enforcement officer who has the authorization of a civilian Justice based on probable cause evidence, then you should not be allowed to place a surreptitious device in any place. But I don’t think we will have that. Instead we will have “software update version 99.99.2 - fixes potential security vulnerability in image handling pipeline” forever and ever and ever. Silly.

@peepstein@mstdn.social very much this, yes. Once we tear down geographic distance as a protection, we open a huge can of worms that can’t be fixed easily. Anything that voids this protection needs much stronger privacy protection than what we are used to from the analog world. @maniajack@mastodon.world @Mer__edith@mastodon.world
