You show who you are by the company you keep. On 17 June 1982 an Italian, Roberto Calvi, whose close ties to the Vatican's financial wing had earned him the nickname God’s Banker, was found hanging by the neck under Blackfriars Bridge in London. Placing his murdered body in such a public space was clearly intended to send a message. The perpetrators of the murder have never been found however the Vatican Bank, the Sicilian Mafia, and the Continental Freemasonry lodge Propaganda Due seem somehow inextricably linked. The P2 masonic lodge later had a starring role in the 1990s Gladio and Mane Puliti scandals where the CIA financed fascist terror cells, and gave kick backs to politicians all with a view to scaring the Italian electorate into voting more to the right. The fallout of the scandals saw several industrialists and politicians commit suicide, and the entire post-war generation of Italian politicians disgraced. Also uncovered were arms caches tended for patriotic right-wing private armies stored in state police barracks. The groups were known collectively as “stay behind groups” and as the scope of the scandal was revealed it led to revelations that most European countries including the UK had similar "stay behind" paramilitary groups.
