The owner of Perplexity said in a recent interview, that he is about to release a new Browser, not to help people, but to get more and better data about the users.
The 20$ are only there, to make people think they are paying for the service with their money, and to get more personal information about them through the payment process.

@simon@fedi.simonwillison.net It is enough money to convince people that they are paying for a service, and that they are not the payment theirself, and it is less enough so that only few people would not use the service because of the price. 6/
