The former First Minister has twice insisted her innocence since Peter Murrell pled guilty to embezzling £400k from the SNP. Ms Sturgeon claimed that she had no idea he was embezzling cash from the SNP as they didn't share a bank account and were both independently wealthy. But this defence has been questioned by critics who have queried why she wouldn't ask her husband why he was buying such obviously expensive goods. Concerns were raised during Operation Branchform about the head of the Crown Office, Lord Advocate Dorothy Bain, also sitting within the government Cabinet, and often right beside Ms Sturgeon during meetings. She did recuse herself from any decision being made about the case, but still served as the SNP Executive's main legal adviser.
