@ColinTheMathmo@mathstodon.xyz I was taught another use of the vinculum; when it is placed above a sub-expression, this is to be treated as a bracketed expression. It is commonly used in this way in conjunction with the radical sign, to cover the term or expression whose root is to be evaluated.

@niallor@mastodon.ie Indeed ... it's a notation, and has been used in several ways. Another is to indicate the repeating portion of a decimal expansion.
