Compassion, I think, is a plant that only grows in soil that has seen fire. Nobody makes it out of childhood without getting burned; everybody's got a wounded soul. When those wounds heal, they become scars, and when the shape of your scar matches the shape of another's wound, recognition begets connection. I think the worst things people do to each other come from injuries of the spirit that never got a chance to heal. That's probably the most important part of being a parent. Hug your kids.
