@neil For uploading I use syncthing, rather than the built-in sync. Actually, I have my (docker) Immich container connected to a read-only volume, so that Immich is just a readonly frontend. My workflow: image on phone as synced to linux box using syncthing. There a script using exiftools and rdfind to rename, move and dedup them into my main archive and then I copy them into a separate folder for three months that are synced back to the phone.
