@titania@retro.pizza this is giving me anxiety now lol (half-serious, half-joking) but yeah, that's absolutely on point, it's such an odd assumption to think anyone can "just do" something that one has spent years learning the ins and outs of.

@TheGentleKlingon@mastodon.art yeah, and what's easy for us is not necessarily easy for other people. I can absolutely make a kickass loaf of bread. I can do complex chemical synthesis and characterization. if you ask me to code you something in Python, I'm gonna stare at you because I haven't had to do it since undergrad and I hated it even then. I would never ask my friends that do coding to come into my kitchen and make bread without instruction, and yet it feels like in the FOSS community in particular, that's the expectation -- that I'll just casually set up my own server for insert-thing-here and that I can't do it means that I'm either stubborn or incapable of following "simple directions" (when those "simple directions" are more like a list of ingredients than actual steps of what to do).
