Just as the news about the #Maduro 'capture' came in, the next thing I read was Walter Benjamin's retelling of Herodotus's story of Psammenitus. The Egyptian king was defeated by the Persian King Cambyses. Cambyses humbled his prisoner by forcing him to watch the triumphal procession, which included his daughter condemned to life as a maid, and his son enroute to execution. Psammenitus remained unmoved until he recognised his frail old servant amongst the slaves, when he broke down.
