By making a hero out of the leader of that sect, they did divert the attention of the multitheistic Romans, away from the Jews, who had only one God. If proven, this theory would not only take the force out of the Christian churches, about 900 at this moment, it would also diminish the powerful Roman Catholic Church back to a mere sect, as it was for nearly 1000 years.
