@hacks4pancakes I like to tell people just entering photography that you can do almost everything I do with your phone and a small tripod mount. Most new phones allow you to shoot in pro mode and capture raw image files. Then you can either buy a raw editing program or use one of the free options like gimp or darktable. Most of photography is composition, so if you have an eye for what makes a great photo you really don't need to start out with expensive gear.
