The light from the eye is described as bright enough to startle or momentarily confuse the viewer. After achieving its prank the spirit quickly disappears, leaving the samurai bewildered.

As my father (descended from starving peasant farmers from Northern Japan might say) "a drunken samurai explains why he was late to battle...a yokai startled me with the piercing light from his butt eyeball." (My mom's family descended from a samurai clan from Southern Japan.)
