I really need to be more discerning about the people I call "friend". I keep letting people around me abuse that term with people I show up for but they don't reciprocate in nearly any meaningful way. I think I got so used to one-way relationships from running groups and events that I let that behavior sit and fester with me. I finally removed one friend that I'd known for 5 years and they had never showed up to support me other than empty gestures like a hug and then speeding away at cons, never asking me to really join anything or be a part of their life. I'd say they even actively avoided me during VR conventions when we were both on too. If we can't have a 1:1 conversation where you care enough to be honest with me, you're a parasite and not a friend. I shouldn't have to bend over backwards if in kind isn't happening either.
