@simon@procrastodon.net I was in the UK recently, staying at my parents' place. They have a pricy satellite TV subscription, the box has a screen reader, AD is easy to toggle, there's plenty of described shows, and the box has AirPlay that doesn't require a code. And yet, I found myself just listening to Audible on AirPods. The schedules for most of the live broadcast channels were so repetitive with far too much overlap; at one point the same mediocre quiz show was being shown on five separate, completely unaffiliated channels. Many had crappy teleshopping for seven hours a day, while others repeated the same block of programming on a loop. Of the hundreds of advertise channels, a significant percentage were timeshift Services, and I had a hard time working out why and how most of the rest were continuing to exist while showing so much dross. All of that to say, I came away with an impression that live TV is a dying platform and my decision to not own a television completely validated. Granted, the shift to streaming services isn't new or news, but I feel like most of those are sliding in the same direction anyway. How many times can Netflix make the same generic thriller? How many Amazon originals create a true emotional impact? Will AI not just make this all worse?
