@phf@tabletop.social My early days in the hobby mostly focused on BECMI, only later really embracing AD&D1e, so it took me a while to fully appreciate just how cobbled together AD&D was from house rules and old Strategic Review/Dragon articles. The seams weren’t so obvious as in, say, Unearthed Arcana, but AD&D1e’s PHB and DMG—especially the latter—were glorious messes indeed. Gary’s whim seems to have been the chief criterion for including any given content.
