@scribblemacher@mstdn.games In the canon it's not unseen that a pokemon just pops out of its ball and leaves its trainer, or they just live with humans without involving balls, but yeah... It's a world where a 10 year old is legally allowed to take a near governmental position by punching the elites with his rogue band of critters, a lot of this wouldn't work in reality :P
Sometimes it's best to not have a canon answer when they would come up with "pokemon go into the grass to willingly be captured".

@mid_kid@fosstodon.org yeah, I recently watched Detective Pikachu with the kids and it was clear that treating pokemon with respect and love was a virtue, and the people that used them for power were "bad". The more complex stuff like "do pokemon get fairly compensated for their work" and "do they have legal protections" etc was obviously not what this world is getting at. (I am actually surprised there isn't a monster taming game that goes off in that direction) Edit: this isn't a complaint; just an observation.
