@dangoodin@infosec.exchange From one of the screenshots you show, it looks like you’re trying Precision finding, as described at the bottom of https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/locate-an-item-ipha779f0c10/ios What they don’t say is that this uses Near Field sensing with a range that depends on your iPhone model and what’s around you when trying to use it. In general, the range is shorter than even Bluetooth. Often 4m or less. If you get any signal, you’re close even if the display isn’t giving you precise indications. Often close enough that you may be able to play a sound on the AirTag. If that doesn’t work, try backing out of Precision finding to see the map display, which could be easier to use from where you’re standing.

  • @dangoodin@infosec.exchange I misspoke, Precision finding doesn’t use NF, but rather ultra wide and (UWB) which is deliberately low power so as not to interfere with, well, anything. Thus the very short range.
