@artsun@merveilles.town @neauoire@merveilles.town Yoinks. You're lucky the mast is still up. The shock loads when this happens are incredible and usually the entire rig now needs to come down and get replaced or at least thoroughly inspected. Wouldn't be surprised if you find more damaged fittings, apart from that torn out spreader end. I've clambered around a few boats during storms saving peoples sails and when that was no longer possible, at least their masts. When we did leave our boat with the genoa up, we made sure it was furled tightly, sheets and furling line cleated (not just on a jammer) and then spiral-wrapped a halyard around the furled sail. You can relieve the mast curve by loosening the shroud turnbuckle on that side. But don't leave it entirely floppy. It's not really a problem though.

@yngmar@social.tchncs.de @neauoire@merveilles.town Yep,full inspection of the rig is going to be essential :/ The worst part is that ever since I weathered a storm in the harbor—and saw several torn genoa sails all around—I’ve always been very careful to make sure the genoa is properly furled, the sheets are secured to the cleats, and a line is tied around the genoa.... but on our second-to-last outing, we had a problem with the genoa, and it had remained imperfectly furled ever since (the furler was malfunctioning and we planned to repair it next weekend). Murphy's Law... I’ll go back tomorrow to reduce the tension in the opposite forestay. I did a little bit when I was there earlier today but wasn't sure if it was a good idea.
