I'm working on a series for self-hosting from your parents to nerdy computer lab with debian running on a shoebox. Currently I have Synology for the "best" option for reliable plug and play option, and Unraid for the messy middle. What I'm looking for now is something that is set and forget, but not a paid OS. I haven't used CasaOS or TrueNAS since they moved to Docker in ElectricEel. Out of the two, which would YOU recommend. This needs to run on old hardware ideally.
